Hi,

I'm having a problem with the online chess app crashing just at the point when it should log on to the FICS. I have tried reinstalling, but the problem remains – the program works fine as a guest FICS player, but when I attempt to log in as a registered FICS user (having paid for the premium app feature), the program crashes, and all subsequent attempts to start the program fail – the splash screen displays, shows the "waiting for connection to FICS" for a few seconds, and then immediately returns to the homescreen. This problem has only appeared since the update to 2.0.1 a few weeks ago.

Thanks,

crwban

Hi Crwban,
So you managed to log in fine (using a named FICS user) in version 2.0?

If so, could you try to delete the app and download it again? You can safely 'buy' the premium activation again – iTunes will recignize that you ahve bought it before so you don't have to pay for it.

Cheers,
Magnus

Hi Magnus,

Yes, version 2.0 worked perfectly using a named FICS user – I never experienced any crashes or problems with it.

I've already deleted, and redownloaded the app – initially, when logging in as a guest user, the app is fine – but as soon as I log in as a named FICS user, the crashing occurs. As far as I know, I haven't changed my FICS account settings in any way, and the FICS prompt is still set to 'fics%'.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

crwban

Hi Magnus,

I seem to have solved the problem – having read one of your comments on another post, about the prompt having to be set to 'fics%', I had a look at what other FICS variables there are. I changed a few likely candidates one-by-one, and found that when I changed the 'gin' variable to 0, the app no longer crashes. I don't know what the default value of this variable is supposed to be, and am fairly certain that I haven't modified it myself, but this seems to solve the problem.

Thanks,

Thanks a lot for the tip! I'll make sure I understand how the 'gin' flag affects the rest of the app in more detail for the next release.

I am having the same problem as listed above. I can log in as a guest, but when I enter my user name and password, then the program says "This will log you out of this session and log you back in again."  I press OK and then it goes to the main screen yet again and stays on that screen forever as if it is frozen. How can I resolve this issue. I have already deleted and re-installed the application twice.

Hi Kevin,

Could you try logging in to FICS here to see if you get any errors?

Let me know how you go!

Ok, Here's the fix. I don't know what all of that talk about logging in with %this and %that means but, for the rest of us who bought the Magnus Chess game and filled out the info and then played the game once……..and then it konked out and never connected again…..here is what I did to fix it. First delete the program on Ipod Touch or Iphone (make sure it's deleted from the iTunes as well)….go back and re-download the program again from Itunes (DON'T OPEN IT YET). The old password and registration you have, might as well chuck 'em. Just for kicks maybe go to freechess.org and type the name and pass into the login field (using the PC computer…. NOT IPHONE/Ipod Touch!) When you login, it most likely will tell you that your name is banned. Don't know why maybe just a bad registration glitch. Mine said I was banned and then said "Goodbye" with the old American Online voice… and I only played once. Anyway. Close everything. Go to freechess.com (using PC NOT IPOD Iphone/Touch) and create a new registration name with a different email address (can get an email account anywhere gmail.com, hotmail.com you get the idea) after creating a new name and getting your password, then open your IPHONE Magnus program (it will ask you to login) when you login go ahead and re-purchase the Magnus progam (don't worry, it won't charge you twice in the bill, Itunes remembers everything you buy and allows for infinite re-downloading without having to repay). After you re-purchase the program then login with the NEW name and password from the NEW registration and everything should work now. Let me know if this worked for you. Chessmassacre.
